So, you’re looking to move into a cybersecurity role in 2025. Or maybe you’re wondering how your current cybersecurity role compares to the industry benchmarks. Either way, you’re in the right place - the cybersecurity industry is growing rapidly, driven by cyber threats and technological advancements. According to the latest reports, it’s predicted that the vended cybersecurity market is projected to increase annually by an unprecedented 12.4% between now and 2027, outstripping historical growth levels. We’ve compiled a list of the top five cybersecurity roles to watch in Australia this year, counting down to the most in-demand job.

5. Cloud Security Engineer

There’s no doubt that the transition to the cloud is one of the biggest tech trends of the decade, and with more cloud-based systems than ever before, the need for cloud security engineers has only skyrocketed.  In Australia, the base salary range for these roles is between $120,000 to $200,000, depending on experience and expertise in platforms like AWS and Azure.

4. Lead Software Security Engineer

Lead software security engineers ensure business applications are free from vulnerabilities, particularly from those that target application layers. They pull in a base salary of between $120,000 to $160,000 annually, with top earners making up to $200,000.

3. Cybersecurity Analyst

Known as the backbone of security teams, cybersecurity analysts are responsible for identifying and mitigating threats in real time. To do this, they need to understand their company’s IT infrastructure like the back of their hand. Not only does this help them evaluate threats that might breach the network, but allows them to continuously iterate network security. In this role, you’d be expecting to start off at $70,000 per year, with the potential to grow your income up to $180,000.

2. Cybersecurity Architect

Cybersecurity architects design, implement, and manage security systems to safeguard company information from networks to sensitive data. As organisations continue to become more digital and distributed, these architects will play a key role in creating solutions for increasingly sophisticated threats. The base salary range for these roles sit between $130,000 to $220,000 and offers substantial room for growth.

1. Chief Information Security Officer (CISO)

Sitting at the top of the cybersecurity hierarchy, the Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) is responsible for overseeing the organisation’s entire information security program. A CISO needs to manage risk, create strategies to protect sensitive data, and ensure compliance with security. In this C-suite role, you can typically expect to bring in a base salary of anywhere between $300,000 to $400,000 annually, with top-earners in larger companies earning even more. There’s a few common denominators when it comes to requirements for winning one of these top five positions, with (commonly) the most obvious being a Bachelor’s Degree in a field like computer science, information technology or software engineering. However, in such a quickly evolving market, soft skills like critical thinking, communication, and adaptability are equally as sought after.
